Okra Growing Information
Abelmoschus esculentus
Transplant: Start in trays at ½” depth, 4-5 weeks before desired transplanting date, after last frost. Best germination rates and speed will occur at temperatures above 80° F. Can be direct-seeded after last frost.
Spacing: 12-18” apart in rows 36” apart.
Growth needs: All Okra needs heat to thrive; temperatures over 65° F. Grow in protected culture in areas where summers are mild to ensure enough heat. Row cover can also be used to increase heat, as well as black plastic and landscape fabric to warm the soil.
Harvest: When fruit are 3-4” long. Harvest using clippers. Plants can be sticky, so wear appropriate clothing when harvesting.
