Shallot Seed Growing Information
Allium cepa var. Aggregatum
Direct Seed: In regions with long, warm growing season, seed as soon as ground can be worked. Soil temperature for seed germination is 50-80° F.
Transplant: Can sow multiple seeds per cell or pot. Separate seedlings when transplanting. Bury plants as you do onions, up to 1st leaf joint.
Spacing: For direct seeded crop, seed 1” apart at ¼" depth. Thin or set transplants at 3-4" apart in rows that are 18-30" apart.
Growth needs: Seeds grow best in well-drained soil with high organic matter, in full sun. Make sure to keep planting well weeded with good air circulation. Shallots are day-length sensitive and should be planted like long day onions.
Harvest: Ready when tops fall down and necks are soft. Pull out of soil and cure in the sun for up to 1 week. Finish drying in a well-ventilated barn or covered space.
Storage: Clip tops once dried and store in mesh bags at 34° F with 60-70% relative humidity.
