Pepper Growing Information
Capsicum annuum
Transplant:Start in trays 6-8 weeks before transplanting at ¼"-½"
depth. Soil temperature for germination is 75-90° F. When first true
leaves appear, pot up plants to larger celled flats or pots to develop a
strong root system. Transplant in soil after last frost, once soil has
warmed and is stable. Planting into black mulch or black landscape fabric
can help warm soil.
Spacing: 15-18” apart in rows that are 24-36" apart.
Growth needs:Peppers need high amounts of phosphorus and calcium to
grow best and prefer well drained soil. Peppers can be grown in
greenhouses or in the field depending on the average temperatures and
length of your summer growing season. In hotter climates with heavy,
direct sunlight, shade cloth can be used to prevent sun scald.
Harvest:When color has deepened to correct color and are of
adequate size. Picking the first fruit as soon as possible will encourage
better yields and production for the rest of the season.
Storage:Peppers store best at 45° F in a cooler at 95% humidity.
