Pumpkin Seed Growing Information Cucurbita pepo Plant habits defined: Bush - all fruit sets at the base of the plant Semi Bush - the majority of the fruit sets at the base of the plant but the plant will send a small vine later in the season producing a few fruits Semi Vine - the plant produces a 4 to 6’ vine with fruit set along the vine Vine - the plant produces a 10’ or longer vine with fruit set along the vine Full Vine - the plant produces a 10’ or longer vine with fruit set along the vine
Direct Seed: Cucurbits have a sensitive root structure, so direct seeding can prevent issues from transplant shock. Sow seed after danger of frost when soil has warmed to a minimum of 70° F. Transplant: Sow seed in trays 3 weeks before transplanting. Soil temperature for germination is 75-90° F. Be careful to disturb roots minimally during transplanting. Spacing: Dependent on the size of the plant and fruit. Small fruited varieties can be planted 18-24" apart, while large fruited varieties need 3-6' spacing. Bush varieties can be planted in rows 4-5' apart. Vining varieties, in rows 6’ apart. Growth needs: Grows best in well-drained soil that is high in organic matter. Harvest: When at desired size and color, before any heavy frosts. Pumpkins can go through 1 or 2 light frosts above 30° F. Cut stem at vine. Be careful not to damage fruit skin or handle to prevent issues in storage. Cure in the sun or indoors for about 1 week at 80° F. White pumpkins should be cured under cover once foliage has died back to discourage yellowing from direct sun exposure. Storage: Store in open crates with good ventilation at 50-60° F at 50-65% relative humidity.
